Valacyclovir (Generic Valtrex)
GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of the popular brand of Valacyclovir called Valtrex, states the following in terms of the uses, treatments, and symptoms for this medication:
Valacyclovir is an antiviral drug used as a treatment against herpes simplex (cold sores around the mouth), herpes zoster (shingles), chicken pox and genital herpes. Valacyclovir is also effective in reducing the number of outbreaks suffered by those prone to genital herpes.
Valacyclovir does not cure herpes simplex, herpes zoster, genital herpes and chicken pox as the viruses causing these infections continue to exist in the body even when the symptoms are not physically visible. What Valacyclovir does is shorten the length and intensity of the outbreaks. Valacyclovir speeds up the healing of the sores, prevents new sores from appearing, reduces the pain and irritation of the sores and reduces the length of time the sores are painful after they have healed. Valacyclovir has also proven effective in reducing the chances of the virus spreading to other areas in those with a weakened or compromised immune system.
