Topiramate is a preventive medication for migraines that reduces migraine frequency. It is a medication that was originally created as an antiepileptic drug that was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as a preventative medication for migraine attacks in adults over the age of 18. While the exact mechanism of action that can prevent migraines is not known, it has proven to affect neuronal hyperexcitability. Neuronal hyperexcitability is regarded as a probable factor in the development of migraines. Topiramate is available only with your doctor's prescription.
