Pantoprazole (generic Protonix)
Pantoprazole (generic Protonix)
Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) manufactured by Pfizer. A generic version of this prescription medication called Protonix is also available. It is a prescription medication available in a tablet, oral liquid suspension, and IV form to be administered by a healthcare provider.
As a proton pump inhibitor, Pantoprazole can decrease the amount of acid the stomach produces. This has led to it being used to treat/lessen the effects of erosive esophagitis in children over the age of 5 and adults. Patients with erosive esophagitis often have an esophagus damaged by stomach acid due to GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). In most cases, the medication will be prescribed for a period of up to 8 weeks. In most cases, the esophagus will have healed significantly.
