Omeprazole (generic Prilosec OTC)
Procter & Gamble, the manufacturer of the popular brand of Omeprazole called Prilosec, states the following in terms of the uses, treatments, and symptoms for this medication:
Omeprazole OTC is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) commonly used as a treatment against stomach and esophageal ailments like ulcers and acid reflux by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. It is available as both an over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medication.
Omeprazole OTC takes effect by blocking a specific system in the cells found in the stomach known as the proton pump. The proton pump is responsible for the last stage of acid production in the stomach. By inhibiting the proton pump, the stomach is forced to prevent less acid, thereby decreasing persistent coughing symptoms, stomach pains, heartburn, and difficulty swallowing. It has also proven effective healing damage done to the stomach and esophagus by stomach acid, preventing ulcers, and may have the potential to prevent esophageal cancer.
It is important to note that Omeprazole OTC does not provide immediate relief against heartburn and may take up to 4 days to take full effect and is available as an OTC medication.
