Esomeprazole (generic Nexium)
Esomeprazole (generic Nexium)
Esomeprazole (also known as Nexium, manufactured by Pfizer) is a protein pump inhibitor that is available as both a delayed-release capsule and as a delayed-release tablet. It is available as a prescription medication.
The medication is used to treat patients suffering from conditions caused by an excess of stomach acids such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), duodenal and gastric ulcers, erosive esophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Esomeprazole is combined with antibiotics (like clarithromycin and amoxicillin) to treat stomach ulcers caused by H. pylori bacteria. Esomeprazole has been proven to be an effective preventative treatment for stomach irritation and ulcers in patients who have been taking NSAIDs like ibuprofen and aspirin for an extended period.
