Low Sex Drive in Men

Many men experience changes in their sex drive (AKA libido) throughout their lives. It is normal for sexual interest to ebb and flow periodically. Temporary decreases in libido can be due to multiple reasons, changes in relationships, work and family obligations, or other changes in life. Sex drive also tends to decrease as men advance in age or in long-term committed relationships. Although these changes are normal, they can be troublesome for men who are highly sexually active and could cause distress. While it is natural for men to notice this decline in libido with age it can sometimes be related to an underlying condition making it important to speak with your doctor if you are experiencing a decrease in your sex drive.

What Causes Low Sex Drive in Men?

There are numerous things that could cause low sex drive in men, some physical and some psychological, or both. There is no one specific thing that causes low libido, so it is important to talk with your doctor if you are worried about your decreased sex drive.

Physical Issues

  • Low testosterone - normal testosterone levels will vary from man to man, and when your testosterone levels decrease, so does your sexual desire. A decrease in your testosterone level is a normal part of aging, but can be treated.
  • Prescription medications - there are many medications that could lower testosterone levels, which therefore may cause low sex drive. Medications could include blood pressure medications, chemotherapy, hormones used to treat prostate cancer, corticosteroids, opioid pain relievers, antifungal medication, cimetidine, anabolic steroids, and some antidepressants.
  • Too little or too much exercise - Too little or no exercise can lead to many chronic conditions that are associated with low sex drive, like obesity, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. Too much exercise has been associated with low sex drive in men.
  • It may be a side effect of another sexual condition such as erectile dysfunction
  • Alcohol use - Heavy alcohol use has been linked to decreased testosterone production which then leads to a lower sex drive.
  • Drug use - the use of tobacco, marijuana, and illicit drugs has been linked to decreased testosterone production, which results in a lower sex drive.

Psychological Issues

  • Depression - Depression can cause changes in many parts of a persons life. People who suffer from depression experience a decreased or lack of interest in activities they once found pleasurable,  this includes sex. Some anti-depressants can also have a side effect of low sex drive.
  • Stress - being distracted by high stress or high-pressure situations can cause a reduction in sexual desire. Stress can disrupt your hormone levels which can also reduce sex drive.
  • Relationship issues
