Levothyroxine is a medication prescribed to an individual whose thyroid gland no longer produces enough of the hormone responsible for regulating the body’s energy and metabolism. Levothyroxine is used to correct the imbalance caused by the lack of this hormone.
Levothyroxine is used to treat Low Thyroid hormone levels, and is known as hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism can occur naturally or as a result of thyroid gland being damaged om medication or radiation or removed via surgery. The thyroid hormone plays a vital role in mental and physical activity and in the mental and physical development of children. Levothyroxine has proven effective in treating and/or preventing an engorged thyroid gland, known as a goiter. Goiters can be caused in a number of ways, including hormonal imbalances, radiation therapy, cancer and even surgery. Levothyroxine should only ever be used a treatment for infertility if the infertility is caused low levels of the thyroid hormone.
