    Levocetirizine is an oral prescription drug used to alleviate symptoms of allergies, with brand name Xyzal. It is an effective drug to treat itching due to hives and reliefs symptoms of seasonal and allergic rhinitis. UCB, a Belgian pharmaceutical company manufactures this drug. 

    Levocetirizine acts as an inverse agonist that decreases activity at histamine H1 receptors which in turn prevents the release of other allergy chemicals and increase the blood supply to the area, providing relief from the presentations of allergic reactions. 

    Xyzal is available as 2.5 mg/5 mL (0.5 mg/mL) oral solution as well as 5 mg breakable tablets (2.5mg can be taken if needed). A more controlled dose of this drug is taking 2.5 mg once in a day. These tablets can be consumed regardless of your food consumption. 

    The most common side-effects of this drug are dry mouth, tiredness, sore throat, redness and swelling of the nasal cavity. This drug should be avoided in case of an existing kidney or liver condition, fever, in pregnancy and during breastfeeding.
