Cephalon, the manufacturer of Provigil, states the following in terms of the uses, treatments, and symptoms for this medication:
Provigil is a medication used to reduce the extreme sleepiness caused by several sleeping disorders including narcolepsy and periods where the user stops breathing during sleep, known as obstructive sleep apnea.
Provigil is also effective at keeping the user awake and alert during the day if they have a work schedule that prevents them from enjoying a regular sleeping pattern (commonly known as shift work sleep disorder – SWSD). Provigil does not cure the previously mentioned sleep disorders and may not remove all traces of sleepiness. It should never be used by those who do not suffer from legitimate sleeping disorders and wish to misuse Provigil as a way of staying awake and alert without needing to sleep. It is not known exactly how Provigil keeps the user awake and alert, but it is thought that it could be due to the medication having an effect on the chemicals in the brain known to control the sleep and wake cycles.
