Cephalon Inc, the manufacturer of Nuvigil states the following in terms of the uses, treatments, and symptoms for this medication:
Nuvigil is a medication used to reduce the extreme sleepiness caused by several sleeping disorders including narcolepsy and periods where the user stops breathing during sleep, known as obstructive sleep apnea.
Nuvigil is also effective at keeping the user awake and alert during the day if they have a work schedule that prevents them from enjoying a regular sleeping pattern (commonly known as shift work sleep disorder – SWSD). Nuvigil does not cure the previously mentioned sleep disorders and may not remove all traces of sleepiness. It should never be used by those who do not suffer from legitimate sleeping disorders and wish to misuse Nuvigil as a way of staying awake and alert without needing to sleep. It is not known exactly how Nuvigil keeps the user awake and alert, but it is thought that it could be due to the medication having an effect on the chemicals in the brain known to control the sleep and wake cycles.
